BACS Connections May 2017

May 23, 2017

American Airlines Volunteers with BACS!

American Airlines Volunteers

American Airlines stopped by BACS’ Memory Care center in Oakland to bring joy to our seniors by hosting a carnival! Participants enjoyed a beautiful day, playing games organized by our volunteers. Thanks to the balloons, music, and excitement of our American Airlines community members, the festive atmosphere was a treat!

The American Airlines volunteers brought an intuitive and creative approach to setting up and staffing the game tables, showing sensitivity for the needs of our players.

Thank you to all the wonderful American Airlines volunteers – we hope we see you next year!

BACS Participant Shares Her Success

Icon Modernizing Mental Health

BACS is celebrating the success of participant Ana Monzon, who is excited to have a new, stable job! Prior to coming to BACS, Ana struggled with language barriers and a lack of job history, limiting her options until she took a job where she was mistreated, just to make ends meet. After significant advocacy and support, BACS Employment Coordination Elliott Geneste de Besme helped Ms. Monzon find a stable job at Goodwill, through their sub-organization Calidad. Congratulations, Ana!

Most participants start BACS’ Supported Employment program when they are unemployed or under-employed, and need support to uplift themselves from poverty. Our staff work tirelessly with each participant to help them find competitive, satisfying, and sustainable employment. Our goal is satisfaction and retention, so our staff stays in touch with participants and their employers every step of the way.

Babies of BACS

BACS loves me

Jamila and A’zah, two of BACS’ wonderful Oakland staff members, are both having children! We are going to miss them both, but are so excited to meet their babies.

A’zah works in BACS’ Success in Achieving Goals of Empowerment (SAGE), and was the first staff member hired. Jamila has been working with BACS’ Oakland Project Connect as the Housing Coordinator for more than a year. Congratulations!

BACS Supported Independent Living Sites Celebrate 44 Years!

98th Ave

BACS opened our first Supported Independent Living (SIL) site in 1973 to help individuals who have mental health and other health-related issues such as homelessness and want to pursue sustainable housing in a safe environment.

Our SIL sites have made a difference for thousands of people over the last 47 years. Help us keep them open!

Employee of the Month

Brandi Jackson

BACS is delighted to announce Brandi Jackson, with Woodroe Place Crisis Residential Center, as Employee of the Month for May!

Brandi found BACS when searching Google for “Empowerment Based Mental Health”, and BACS was the first result! Brandi says “I really love the diverse and comprehensive programs BACS provides to the community and I love being a part of the organization. I think BACS ‘ work matters because although we collectively “plant seeds” for change and long term independence, we are also providing “real-time” tangible support to clients every day.” Congratulations, Brandi!
