Leading Change through Best Practices

gayle-northrop

BACS’ Board of Directors convened an internal ‘Board Best Practices’ conference with non-profit consultant Gayle Northrop to maximize the impact of our Board.

With Ms. Northrop, we analyzed nation-wide trends, assessed the strengths and opportunities for growth within the BACS board, and developed an action plan to enhance our internal systems and more effectively communicate our work to the community.

“It was very instructive for the BACS Board to hear how other non-profit boards operate and to have the opportunity to discuss critical issues facing the agency. I feel like we came away better informed, better aligned, and with some concrete ideas to help us moving forward.”
—Eric Dyce, Board President

Happy Anniversary to Our Fremont ADC

adc-fremont-15-year-anniversary

BACS is delighted to celebrate the 15 year anniversary of our Fremont Adult Day Center! The program first opened in October of 2000, and since then has provided more than 320 individuals a space to connect with others, socialize, and participate in guided activities.

Thank you to everyone who makes our center special — caregivers, staff, and the participants who come every day!

Employee of the Month

BACS has an All-Star staff! Below, we honor our “Employee of the Month” for October!

Shaun Orrante, Personal Services Coordinator, HIP:

Shaun

Shaun has done a tremendous job of increasing her skills and care for participants during a time of great transition in the HIP program. Shaun is always working to bring the most benefit to everyone we serve. She strives to provide the best care and support she can to her particular participants and their families, and she still always finds time to make herself available to her teammates, using her wisdom and experience to help them succeed.

Further, she continually indicates her interest in strengthening the HIP program and BACS, and provides actual suggestions for how things might improve.
Shaun has done a tremendous job providing therapeutic support and helping teens and young adults with early or untreated symptoms of mental illness in BACS’ new Hope Intervention Program.

Congratulations, Shaun!

Celebrating Our Excellent Staff

We are delighted to announce that two of our amazing staff have been promoted!

Asha

Asha started with BACS January 2014 working  as a registered nurse, collaborating with pharmacists and physicians to ensure BACS clients were receiving appropriate care.  During this time, Asha stepped into an additional role as the agency needed an Activity Coordinator at the BACS Fremont site.  Through her activities and bright personality she was able to assist with improving the overall experience for our clients at BACS. Asha’s gerontology experience and professionalism make her the ideal candidate for a promotion to Program Supervisor.

inese

Inese has been with BACS since 2009 as a Program Aide.  During her services with BACS she became a Certified Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program Instructor.  After going to a training in 2010 on Early Memory Loss, Inese was part of the initiative to provide focused Early Memory Loss care activities to assist participants with prolonging their quality of life after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s/Dementia.  Not long after starting this initiative, BACS Adult Day Care Program was given a National Award for the excellent effectiveness of the program and its outreach to low income families.  Inese’s proven track record has merited her the promotion to Activity Coordinator.

Nancy Succeeds in Employment Program

Nancy

After retirement, Nancy D. decided it was time to take on a new challenge. Nancy set her sights on brand development, and within three months of working with BACS’ IPS Supported Employment Program, Nancy landed a job as Brand Ambassador with a national pet food company.

To all those seeking work, Nancy says “Don’t get discouraged — keep going on interviews, applying to different places, networking – be willing to persevere. Use the Job Clubs and Employment Program at the Wellness Center.  With support from my BACS Employment Coordinator it took 3 months for me to find my job. I am very happy with my position as a Brand Ambassador! Thank you BACS!”

Books4Us Reminder

Books4Us

In celebration of BACS’ 10 year anniversary of the Books4Us ‘Reading for Remembering’ program at the North Oakland Senior Center, we are asking participants of the program if they are interested in taking part in creating a public service announcement video highlighting their experiences in the program though the years.

Release forms were previous mailed to all Books4Us participants with a return SASE. Additional forms are available at the Oakland Adult Day Program. We want your story to be seen, so please remember to initial the box on the first page of the release form and sign the second page, then mail back in the SASE or leave at BACS for pick-up.
